Who We Are

Imperium Renewables, Inc. was founded as Seattle Biodiesel, LLC in 2004 by John Plaza to commercialize his new design for Biodiesel refining. Saybr Contractors, the leading petroleum facility contractor in the Northwest, entered into a joint venture to construct the first commercial implementation of this biodiesel refinery technology. By early 2005, the refinery opened for business. Imperium Renewables, Inc. operated the Seattle refinery as a wholly owned subsidiary with a yearly capacity of 5 million gallons per year until late 2007. The facility has now transitioned to a research and development facility focused on identifying and commercializing next generation biofuels.

In the spring of 2005, Imperium Renewables, Inc. was formed to commercialize our technology more broadly. In August, 2007 we officially opened the nation’s largest Biodiesel refinery, capable of producing up to 100 million gallons per year, in Grays Harbor Washington. IRI has formed a subsidiary called Imperium Hawaii expressly for the purpose of developing its third biodiesel production facility, which will be located on Oahu in Hawaii. The plant will provide up to 100 MGY of biodiesel fuel with a focus on locally produced feedstock.

But it’s not just fuel we’re working on. John Plaza founded this company with a goal of fundamentally changing how we power our vehicles by creating a fuel that would reduce global warming and our dependence on the dwindling supply of petroleum, while at the same time providing a renewable source of energy for generations to come. That commitment to sustainability runs through everything we do. We are dedicated to encouraging Social Responsibility within our corporation and within our communities. We strive to make decisions based not only on financial considerations, but also based on the short and long term consequences that our actions have on our world.
